Scientists in the United States have developed a promising new drug that could significantly improve survival rates for patients with pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest forms of the disease.

Researchers at Northwestern University tested the experimental drug, elraglusib, in combination with standard chemotherapy in a clinical trial involving 233 patients with advanced cancer.
The results, published in the journal Nature Medicine, showed a notable improvement in survival. Patients who received elraglusib alongside chemotherapy lived an average of 10.1 months, compared to 7.2 months for those given chemotherapy alone.
Perhaps most strikingly, 44 percent of patients on the new treatment were still alive after one year—double the 22 percent survival rate seen in the chemotherapy-only group. The drug also reduced the overall risk of death by 38 percent.
Lead researcher Devalingam Mahalingam described the findings as a source of “cautious optimism,” noting that pancreatic cancer remains one of the hardest cancers to treat. He emphasized that further phase-three trials are needed to confirm the results.
Side effects of the new treatment were similar to those seen with chemotherapy, including fatigue, low white blood cell counts, and temporary vision changes. Researchers said these effects were manageable and reversible.
Pancreatic cancer is particularly dangerous because it often develops without clear symptoms. By the time it is diagnosed, the disease has usually spread, limiting treatment options. Survival rates remain low, with only a small percentage of patients living beyond a year after diagnosis.
Experts say lifestyle factors such as smoking, obesity, alcohol use, and poor diet can increase risk, while researchers continue to investigate other potential contributors.
Although still in the trial stage, elraglusib is being seen as a potential breakthrough—not only for pancreatic cancer but possibly for other hard-to-treat tumors as well.
For patients and families, the findings offer something that has long been in short supply in this field: real, measurable hope.
