French authorities are exploring a potential ban on Kanye West performing in Marseille, as opposition grows over the rapper’s history of antisemitic remarks.

West, now known as Ye, is scheduled to perform at the Stade Vélodrome on June 11. However, the planned concert has triggered strong reactions from political leaders and community groups across France.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez is said to be “highly determined” to prevent the show from going ahead, with officials examining legal options to block the performance.

Marseille’s mayor, Benoît Payan, had earlier made his stance clear, saying the artist was “not welcome” in the city. He accused West of promoting hate and said Marseille should not serve as a platform for such views.

The controversy follows a string of incidents involving the artist, including past antisemitic comments, a song referencing Adolf Hitler, and the sale of merchandise featuring Nazi imagery. These actions have drawn widespread condemnation internationally.

France’s move comes shortly after the rapper faced similar restrictions in the United Kingdom. Authorities there denied him entry, leading to the cancellation of his planned headline appearance at the Wireless Festival in London.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer defended the decision, stating that the government would act decisively against antisemitism and protect public values.

Sponsors and partners had also withdrawn support from the UK festival, reflecting growing pressure from political leaders and advocacy groups.

West has previously issued a public apology, attributing his behavior in part to mental health struggles. However, critics argue that his actions form a consistent pattern and question the sincerity of his remorse.

French officials have not yet confirmed a final decision, but the debate highlights a broader tension in Europe over free expression, public safety, and the limits of tolerance when it comes to hate speech.

If the ban goes ahead, it would mark another significant setback for the artist’s return to major international stages.
