An 11-year-old boy accused of fatally shooting his father appeared in court for the first time, telling investigators he did not think about the consequences before pulling the trigger.

According to local media reports, Clayton Dietz is charged with homicide in connection with the death of his adoptive father, Douglas Dietz, in the early hours of Jan. 13 — the day of Clayton’s 11th birthday. Authorities allege the shooting happened after Douglas took away the boy’s Nintendo Switch and told him to go to bed following birthday celebrations.

Court documents cited by multiple outlets state that Clayton became upset, later found a key to a gun safe in his father’s drawer while looking for the gaming console, and instead discovered a firearm. An affidavit reviewed by reporters alleges he fired a single shot at his father. When asked by police what he thought would happen after pulling the trigger, Clayton reportedly said he was angry and “had not thought about that.”

Douglas’s wife, Jillian Dietz, told police she and her husband had sung happy birthday to their son before going to bed. She later awoke to the sound of a gunshot. According to reports, she found Clayton in a closet, where he allegedly said, “He’s dead,” before running downstairs shouting that his father was dead.

Clayton, who was previously denied bail, was led into court in handcuffs. His attorney, Dave Wilson, said he had no comment on the case but indicated his goal is to have the matter moved to juvenile court. For now, the boy is being tried as an adult. Authorities have said Douglas and Jillian adopted Clayton in 2018.
