The newly appointed British High Commissioner-designate to Nigeria, Pete Vowles, has arrived in Abuja to assume duty as the United Kingdom’s top diplomatic representative in the country, signalling a new phase in the longstanding bilateral relationship between London and Abuja.

Vowles succeeds Dr Richard Montgomery CMG, who completed his tenure as British High Commissioner to Nigeria.

Speaking on his arrival in Abuja, Vowles said his immediate priority would be to gain a deeper understanding of Nigeria through direct engagement with its people, travelling across the country and immersing himself in its culture and dynamism.

“I am hugely excited to be in Nigeria. My first priority is to listen and learn – to travel, meet people and immerse myself in this extraordinary country, its culture and its energy,” he said.

The new envoy said the UK-Nigeria relationship was anchored principally on strong people-to-people connections, pledging to build on the existing partnership and identify new areas of cooperation.

“The UK and Nigeria have a deep and enduring partnership, built above all on the connections between our people,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to discovering Nigeria for myself and working with partners across the country to build on that relationship and see what more we can achieve together.”

Vowles brings extensive diplomatic and development experience to the assignment, having most recently served as His Majesty’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe.

He has also held senior leadership positions within the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and previously served as Ambassador to Myanmar.

His diplomatic career has taken him across Africa and Asia, with senior postings including Bangladesh, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya.

The United Kingdom announced Vowles as its next High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria on June 16, 2026, ahead of his assumption of the Abuja-based assignment.

His arrival comes as the UK and Nigeria continue to deepen cooperation across a broad range of areas, with Vowles signalling that listening, wider engagement and stronger people-to-people connections will be central to his tenure.

By beginning his assignment with a commitment to travel, engage directly with Nigerians and understand the country beyond Abuja, the new envoy is positioning his mission around a deeper appreciation of the breadth and complexity of the UK’s long-standing Nigerian partnership.
