Applications for the prestigious Chevening Scholarships are now open, offering outstanding professionals the opportunity to pursue fully funded master’s degrees at universities across the United Kingdom.

The application window runs from 4 August to 6 October 2026, with successful candidates joining a global network of future leaders equipped with world-class education, international connections and the skills to tackle global challenges while driving sustainable development in their home countries.

Funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations, the Chevening programme has, for more than four decades, supported emerging leaders from over 140 countries and territories to undertake one-year taught master’s degree programmes at UK universities.

The scholarship is designed for individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership potential, influence and networking ability, as well as a strong commitment to creating lasting impact in their communities and beyond.

Speaking on the opening of applications, Head of the Scholarships Unit at the FCDO, Emma Hennessey, said Chevening is seeking outstanding individuals who are committed to working with the United Kingdom to build a more resilient, prosperous and sustainable future.

She noted that the programme is committed to building a diverse and inclusive global community of future leaders and encouraged applications from under-represented groups.

According to Hennessey, successful scholars are selected not only for their achievements but also for their leadership potential, their ability to build meaningful relationships and their commitment to delivering positive change.

“Through access to UK education, networks, and experiences, Chevening equips future leaders with the tools and connections needed to address shared international challenges together,” she said.

She urged prospective applicants to reflect carefully on Chevening’s vision and assess how their personal experiences, leadership journey and future ambitions align with the programme’s mission before submitting an application.

Also encouraging Nigerians to apply, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, described Chevening as much more than an academic scholarship.

According to him, the programme provides scholars with access to a world-class education, exposure to British values and culture, and lifelong professional networks that empower participants to become agents of positive change.
