Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited and Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited have strengthened Nigeria’s healthcare capacity with the donation of advanced respiratory diagnostic equipment to University of Lagos Teaching Hospital, marking a significant step toward improving pulmonary care in the country.

The donation, made last week, includes an Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) system and a Body Plethysmograph—two critical tools that will enable the hospital to deliver cutting-edge diagnostics for respiratory diseases.

The EBUS system allows clinicians to carry out real-time, guided biopsies and accurately stage lung cancer, a crucial process in determining appropriate treatment options and timelines. Meanwhile, the Body Plethysmograph enhances the diagnosis of asthma, restrictive lung diseases, and other related conditions, significantly improving patient outcomes.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Managing Director of SNEPCo, Ronald Adams, described the intervention as transformative for Nigeria’s healthcare system. Represented by the company’s General Manager, Communications, Abubakar Ahmed, he said the initiative signals a shift from limited diagnostic capacity to technology-driven, evidence-based respiratory care.

“This is more than a donation—it is a shift,” Adams said. “It empowers clinicians to practice medicine at the full height of their training and builds institutional capacity that will shape Nigeria’s healthcare landscape for generations.”

Also speaking, Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services, Olanrewaju Igandan, emphasised that the initiative reflects a broader commitment to national development beyond energy production. Represented by Deputy Manager, External Relations, Edith Bunmi-Lawson, he noted that investments in healthcare infrastructure are critical to building resilient institutions and improving quality of life.

“This initiative reflects our belief that sustainable national development goes beyond energy production. It is about improving lives, building resilient institutions and investing in systems that endure,” he said.

On behalf of the hospital, Chief Medical Director of LUTH, Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo, who was represented by Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Babawale, described the donation as a landmark development for Nigeria’s public healthcare sector.

He said the equipment would not only expand access to highly specialised pulmonology services but also make advanced care more affordable and convenient for patients.

“This donation not only makes advanced pulmonology care available but also more accessible to Nigerians. We are extremely grateful for the generosity, foresight and trust shown in our institution,” he said.

Beyond immediate clinical benefits, the new equipment is expected to position LUTH as a centre of excellence in pulmonology, supporting world-class patient care, specialist training, and research in respiratory medicine.

The donation forms part of a broader portfolio of social investments by SNEPCo, NNPC and their co-venturers, spanning education, healthcare, and human capital development, as part of efforts to drive sustainable impact across Nigeria.
