The Diplomatic Missions of the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia have launched a joint international campaign to combat visa fraud and protect people from exploitation by fraudulent immigration facilitators.

The initiative, known as the #FightingVisaFraud campaign, was unveiled during International Fraud Awareness Week and represents an unusually high level of cooperation among the three countries. Their shared history, common values and longstanding collaboration on immigration and security matters shaped the decision to act together on a growing global threat.

Visa fraud has increased worldwide, with criminal networks using sophisticated tactics to deceive applicants. Many victims are promised guaranteed visas, unqualified job offers or fast tracked application processing in exchange for large payments.

Instead of the opportunities they hope for, they often face financial loss, visa refusals, travel bans and in severe cases, trafficking and exploitation. The three countries note that they have seen similar fraud patterns affecting their immigration systems, strengthening the need for a coordinated response.

British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, said that visa fraud destroys dreams and devastates families, adding that criminal facilitators take advantage of people’s aspirations and put them in harm’s way.

He urged applicants to rely only on official channels, verify any advice they receive and report suspicious activity. He stressed that while the UK welcomes legitimate applications, anyone who attempts fraud risks serious consequences, including a ten year travel ban.

Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Pasquale Salvaggio, said the campaign reflects the shared values of the three countries and their commitment to maintaining fair and secure immigration systems.

He noted that Canada supports people who choose to travel, study or work through proper and legitimate pathways, and that the joint effort is meant to protect those individuals from exploitation.

The three missions are encouraging applicants to stay alert, avoid promises that sound too good to be true and verify the credibility of anyone offering immigration services. They warn that fraudulent attempts can result in financial loss with no recourse, long term travel bans, criminal charges in some jurisdictions and exposure to serious risks, including trafficking.

Their immigration authorities continue to work closely with law enforcement to investigate and prosecute those involved in visa fraud and illegal facilitation.

Action Fraud remains an available reporting and advice service for individuals and small businesses who encounter fraud. While the #FightingVisaFraud campaign is coordinated internationally, each of the three countries will carry out the effort according to its national context and priorities.
