In a demonstration of its growing commitment to environmental stewardship alongside energy development, Heirs Energies Limited has launched the Agbada Green Corridor Initiative, a tree-planting programme designed to promote biodiversity, enhance climate resilience and support environmental sustainability across its operational areas in Rivers State.

The initiative was formally unveiled along the Agbada Non-Associated Gas (NAG) Corridor in Omuohia Community, bringing together representatives of the Rivers State Ministry of Environment, the OML 17 Host Communities Development Trust, community leaders, environmental stakeholders and employees of Heirs Energies in a collaborative effort aimed at strengthening environmental conservation within the Niger Delta.

The launch reflects a broader shift within Nigeria’s energy industry as operators increasingly seek to balance hydrocarbon production with sustainability objectives and community development. For Heirs Energies, the programme forms part of a wider strategy focused on responsible energy development, reinforcing the message that economic growth and environmental protection can advance together.

Speaking at the event on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Energies, Osa Igiehon, the company’s Senior Vice President, Production, Bola Bode, said the initiative underscores the company’s commitment to creating lasting value for both host communities and the environment.

According to him, as the company continues to expand production and strengthen its position within Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, it remains conscious that long-term business success is closely linked to the wellbeing of local communities and the sustainability of the ecosystems in which it operates. He described the Agbada Green Corridor Initiative as a practical expression of the company’s commitment to responsible operations and sustainable development.

The tree-planting exercise was implemented in partnership with the Rivers State Ministry of Environment and the Self Help and Rural Development Association, with support from the OML 17 Host Communities Development Trust and community stakeholders. The collaboration highlights the growing role of partnerships between government institutions, local communities and private-sector operators in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development in resource-producing regions.

Officials of the Rivers State Ministry of Environment commended the initiative, noting that environmental sustainability requires collective action and sustained collaboration among all stakeholders. They emphasised the importance of programmes that contribute to ecological restoration while creating greater awareness about environmental responsibility within host communities.

The Agbada Green Corridor Initiative aligns with Heirs Energies’ broader sustainability agenda, which prioritises environmental stewardship, community partnership and long-term value creation. It also reflects the increasing importance of environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations within Africa’s energy industry as operators seek to strengthen their social licence to operate while contributing to national and global climate objectives.

Since assuming operatorship of OML 17 in 2021, Heirs Energies has emerged as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing indigenous energy companies. The company has more than doubled oil production to over 50,000 barrels per day and tripled gas production to more than 135 million standard cubic feet per day, making it a significant contributor to Nigeria’s energy security goals.

Today, the company accounts for approximately five per cent of Nigeria’s crude oil production and a similar share of domestic gas supply, positioning it as a critical player in efforts to expand energy access, support industrialisation and drive economic growth.

The launch of the Agbada Green Corridor Initiative therefore represents more than a tree-planting exercise. It signals an attempt to integrate environmental responsibility into the core of energy operations, demonstrating that as indigenous companies expand their role in Nigeria’s petroleum sector, sustainability and community development are increasingly becoming central pillars of their growth strategies. By combining production growth with environmental conservation, Heirs Energies is seeking to show that Africa’s energy future can be built not only on resource development but also on the preservation of the ecosystems and communities that support it.
