A 59-year-old man died at home in northwest Portugal after his wife, who weighs over 100 kg, accidentally tripped and fell on him, police said.

The accident occurred early on Aug. 11 in the Campanhã residential area on the outskirts of Porto.

According to the Daily Mail, the 60-year-old wife got out of bed, tripped, and fell onto her husband, who was lying on the floor. Trapped between the bed and the wall, she could not get up on her own and cried out for help.

Neighbors rushed over and managed to lift her off, but the husband was unconscious. Firefighters and paramedics arrived shortly afterward, but the victim had gone into cardiac arrest and could not be revived.

The wife’s weight was believed to be the main reason she was unable to move after the fall. The victim was described as slight in build, while his wife was obese, and it took five strong men to lift her out of the narrow space, according to Portuguese daily Correio da Manhã.

Police concluded this was a rare accident with no criminal element, and the cause of death was determined to be “accidental asphyxia.”

The wife is currently receiving psychological counseling following the shock.
