TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited and Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited have renewed their cooperation agreement on deployment of patent technology for emission detection and control at operated oilfield assets in Nigeria.

The deal entails continued deployment of AUSEA technology, extending by 24 months a partnership that began in December 2023 to strengthen methane detection, measurement and reduction efforts.

AUSEA, short for Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Applications, is a drone-based technology developed by TotalEnergies in collaboration with French National Centre for Scientific Research and University of Reims. The system enables high-precision monitoring of methane and carbon dioxide emissions, helping operators identify emission sources and implement mitigation measures.

The renewed agreement forms part of efforts by TotalEnergies to curb greenhouse gas emissions from its operations. The company said it became the first exploration and production operator in Nigeria to eliminate routine gas flaring across all its operated assets by the end of 2023 and is targeting near-zero methane emissions by 2030.

According to the company, AUSEA monitoring campaigns are now conducted across all operated sites, with annual drone flights aimed at detecting and reducing methane emissions. It added that more than 2,500 sensors were installed in 2025 to facilitate real-time detection of methane leaks and enable rapid intervention.

Commenting on the renewed partnership, Country Chair and Managing Director of TotalEnergies in Nigeria, Matthieu Bouyer, said the extension would enable the company to support NNPC’s efforts to reduce methane emissions through the application of proven technology.

“Extending our partnership with NNPC allows us to support our partner in their journey to reduce methane emissions by leveraging a cutting-edge proven technology, improving measurement and accelerating action. It’s an important step for Nigeria as it helps valorise Nigerian resources while lowering emissions,” he said.

TotalEnergies has operated in Nigeria for more than six decades and currently employs over 1,800 people across its various business segments. Nigeria remains one of the company’s major production hubs, contributing about 500,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day of operated production in 2025. The company also maintains an extensive downstream network comprising approximately 514 service stations nationwide.
