A Serbian professional football match came to a sudden end when a coach suddenly collapsed and died of a heart attack, sending shocked players from his team weeping on the pitch. The tragic event occurred just ten days after he was appointed as the team’s manager.

Mladen Žižić, 45, the coach of Serbian First League team FK Radnički 1923, suddenly lost consciousness and collapsed around the 22nd minute of the first half near the bench during a match against FK Mladost Lučani.

Despite receiving emergency treatment from on-site medical staff and being immediately transported to a hospital, he did not regain consciousness.

The match, which had resumed after Žižić was transported to the hospital, was completely halted just before the end of the first half following the sad news.

All involved, including players and referees from both teams present at the stadium, were in shock and could not hide their panic. Some players from his team sat heavily on the pitch or lay down, shedding tears.

FK Radnički 1923 declared in an official statement saying, “The late coach left a significant legacy with his professionalism, composure, and generosity.”

“Despite his short tenure with the team, he earned the respect of players, colleagues, and fans alike through his unique energy, professional spirit, and humane qualities. We extend our deepest condolences to Žižić’s family, friends, and everyone who knew him,” the club added.

The Serbian Football Association also stated, “Coach Žižić was a dedicated leader and a respected figure. His love for football and the legacy he left behind will be remembered forever.”

Other clubs in the same league also sent condolences, and fans continued to pay their respects by laying flowers outside the stadium, creating a wave of mourning.
