A team of doctors in India has successfully relieved an old woman the burden of a huge ovarian tumor nearly as heavy as half of a conventional bag of rice, allowing the patient a third lifeline after initial battle with breast cancer.

According to a media release distributed by the agency, Asian News International (ANI), the team of surgeons, gynecologists and other specialized medical personnel successfully carried a well planned procedure that ran through several hours before lifting out the 18 kilogram mass from the woman’s midsection.  

The mass was identified as ovarian tumor prior to the surgical procedure on the 68 year old patient who had earlier survived breast cancer.

The patient whose name is withheld in this report is said to have approached the hospital with complaints of persistent abdominal bloating and discomfort; and preliminary investigations revealed a large ovarian mass.

Although initial tumour markers were not elevated, the nature of the growth remained uncertain until a multidisciplinary team led by Senior Gynecologist, and a Senior Oncosurgeon took thorough evaluation of the medical case.

 The later mapped a detailed preoperative planning abd prepared for a complex high-risk procedure.

An intraoperative frozen section biopsy confirmed the tumour as a borderline ovarian mucinous cystadenoma–a rare tumour with low malignant potential. With the patient’s prior consent, a hysterectomy was also performed to ensure comprehensive treatment.

“This case required thoughtful decision-making and meticulous surgical planning,” said Dr. Mansukhani. “We had to prepare for every eventuality, including the risk of malignancy.”

During the surgery, the team discovered an enormous ovarian mass measuring 44 x 37 x 30 cm, containing nearly 16 litres of fluid and weighing approximately 18 kilograms.

Following the successful surgery, the patient recovered well and was discharged after 10 days, dropping some 20 kilograms (kg) of weight from 116 kg to approximately 96 kg.

“This was a textbook example of ethical, patient-centric care,” said Dr. Koppiker. “Given her age and cancer history, she underwent a major operation with excellent outcomes, thanks to diligent planning, coordinated care, and clinical vigilance.”

The case highlights the critical importance of timely medical intervention, multidisciplinary care, and specialist surgical expertise, the statement reads.
