The United Kingdom Government has announced the appointment of Peter Vowles as the next British High Commissioner to Nigeria, reinforcing diplomatic ties between the two countries.

According to the announcement, Vowles will assume office in Abuja in September 2026, succeeding Richard Montgomery, who will remain in post until the transition takes effect.

Vowles brings extensive experience in diplomacy and international development to the position. He most recently served as His Majesty’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe between 2023 and 2026, having earlier held the role of Ambassador to Myanmar from 2021 to 2022.

During his career, he has occupied several senior leadership positions within the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and its predecessor, the Department for International Development (DFID), including serving as Transformation Director and Director for Asia, the Caribbean and Overseas Territories.

His diplomatic and development work has also taken him across South Asia and Africa, with postings in Bangladesh, India, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Kenya. He began his professional career in Zimbabwe, where he worked on education and development programmes.

Commenting on his appointment, Vowles said he was honoured to be named British High Commissioner to Nigeria, describing the country as a nation of immense importance to the United Kingdom.

“I am honoured to be appointed as British High Commissioner to Nigeria. Nigeria is a country of immense importance to the United Kingdom, and I look forward to working closely with Nigerian partners to strengthen our relationship across trade, development and security,” he said.

The appointment comes as the United Kingdom and Nigeria continue to deepen cooperation in key areas including trade, investment, security, governance, education and development, with both countries maintaining longstanding diplomatic and economic relations.
