TCN commissions two new 600MW plants to national grid
Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has added 600MW of power to the national grid following the commissioning and evacuation of electricity generated by the Azura Power Plant and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company plants.
Managing Director of TCN, Sule Abdulaziz, while speaking at the commissioning of the Ihovbor/Benin and Ihovbor/Ajaokuta 330kV Turn-In-Turn-Out Transmission Line Project in Benin City, Edo State, said it was now the responsibility of distribution companies (DisCos) to distribute the 600MW to customers.
He stated that power used to be generated but not evacuated before the newly-commissioned 330kV Turn-In-Turn-Out Transmission Line was built.
Abdulaziz said the evacuation of more power meant Nigerians would get more electricity.
“They will distribute more power. Our job is to transmit power from these generators to the load units. It is the responsibility of the distribution companies to distribute to customers. Industries will get more power.
“This project involves the strategic linking of the existing Benin/Ajaokuta 330kV transmission line to the Ihovbor Transmission Substation, creating two new transmission routes with a total length of 14 kilometres.
“With the completion of this strategic project, we have increased the operational flexibility of the transmission network and strengthened the resilience of power delivery within Benin corridor by this connection to the power plant.
“This has equally helped in alleviating transmission bottlenecks, enhanced system reliability, while allowing the distribution companies access to more bulk electricity for its customers nationwide.
“As we commission this project today, TCN reaffirms its resolve to continue investing in the expansion of transmission infrastructure nationwide. We are determined to build a grid that not only meets today’s demands, but is also future ready.”
Managing Director, Energo Nigeria, Predrag Mihel, said the project included the construction of approximately 14 kilometers of 330kV double-circuit transmission line, comprising of 30 towers and foundations including dead-end, angle and suspension towers.
