Ghanaian football expatriate, Christian Atsu, has been confirmed dead and his remains which were extracted from earthquake rubble in Turkey where he played for the Hatayspor professional football club has been flown to Ghana for burial.
Ghana Embassy in Turkey which conveyed the news, indicated that “the elder brother and twin sister of Christian Atsu and an Officer of the Embassy were present at the site when the body was recovered” at the weekend.
The 31 year old Ghanaian footballer had been missing following earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023.
The club had earlier posted a misleading announcement that Christian Atsu was part of those rescued alive by international collaboration of rescuers combing the rubbles for dead and surviving victims of the natural disaster.
A statement issued by the Ghanaian external affairs ministry extended government’s condolences to the widow and family of Christian Atsu, adding that the country’s embassy was currently making the necessary arrangements with the assistance of the government of Turkey to have the body transported to Ghana for burial.
